A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Before we get into a discussion about the reasons why the Left continues to try to infringe upon the Second Amendment, let’s discuss its origins and purpose. The battle of Lexington and Concord happened 250 years ago on April 19, 1775 – – fourteen and a half months before the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4,1776. The first thing we need to clarify is what “A well-regulated Militia” means, then and now. In colonial times, in order to respond to sudden invasions or other emergencies, the government would oftentimes rely on a militia that consisted of ordinary civilians who supplied their own weapons. Well-regulated meant (and means) well-trained in the use of a firearm. Therefore, the Left’s contention that the right to bear arms is limited to the National Guard is patently false. This is another example of how Leftist try to bend language to fit their agenda. It is also the reason why conservatives are “originalists” who rely on the meaning of words that were in effect at the time they were written and continue to have that same original meaning today.
In the Declaration of Independence, our country’s Founders listed the right to life as an unalienable right granted to us by our Creator. It is not a right granted to us by government (which would then be a right that could be subsequently rescinded). After the war was won, and when the US Constitution was written in 1787, there was not yet a Bill of Rights. The ratification of the Constitution was in peril because it didn’t have a Bill of Rights. After the amendments were drafted and circulated to the states, the Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15, 1791.
Supporters of the Second Amendment argue that it is an unalienable right that allows citizens to protect themselves, their families and their property from harm. Firearms are necessary, not only for self-defense, but are necessary as a safeguard against potential government tyranny. It was true in the days of King George, and today, and well into the future.
Opponents of the Second Amendment hold the view that it is outdated and no longer necessary. In our opinio, that viewpoint is naïve. Opponents claim that the possession of firearms leads to gun violence. However, guns do not commit heinous acts. Criminals and mentally ill people commit those acts. Opponents continue to prescribe gun control laws, such as a ban on certain types of firearms. Unfortunately, criminals (by definition) do not follow laws. And people who are mentally ill or evil will not care about gun control laws either.
Highland Park, Illinois, had a long-standing “assault weapons” ban. Robert Crimo III was recently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his heinous act during an Independence Day parade in 2022. The Left’s belief that laws will stop criminals or mentally ill people is also naïve. Unfortunately, some Leftists contemplate yet another “solution,” and that would be to confiscate all guns. That is what happened to the Jews in Germany in November 1938, and that law helped facilitate Hitler’s version of his “Final Solution.” The Left keeps chipping away at the Second Amendment, because they do not accept the Founders’ wisdom that our Second Amendment rights “Shall Not Be Infringed.“
US Debt Clock – – March 1st – $107,400 per citizen / April 1st – $107,400
Please note that the debt of the federal government increased somewhat during March, but so did the number of citizens.
